Art history at the TU Berlin
The subject of art history has been taught at the Technische Universität Berlin and its predecessor institutions – the Bauakademie and the Technische Hochschule Charlottenburg – for 150 years, so longer than at any other university in Berlin. The first chair was set up to teach art history to architects and engineers. Today the Chair forms part of the Institute of Art Studies and Historical Urban Studies at Faculty I – Humanities.
The main art history research interests at the TU are the history of art, art history as cultural history, the art history of East Central Europe and the history of architecture.
In addition to the Master’s program “Art Studies”, which focuses on “Art Technology” and “Museum Studies”, the Institute also offers the core subject “Art Studies” as part of the interdisciplinary Bachelor’s program “Culture and Technology”.
